- I was born at SUI Hospital, in Iowa City. My birth name was Barbara Sue Shank and I was with my birth mother for appx. 2 mos. before she surrendered me to the American Home Finding Association in Ottumw, IA, on 06/10/1946. Ten days later I was placed with my adoptive, then foster, parents, Kenneth & Elinor Thompson, and the adoption was finalized on 06/28/1947, in the Municipal Court of the city of Ames, Iowa.

Searching for members of my birth family
I was born Barbara Sue Shank, on 04/13/1946, at State University Hospital, Iowa City. I have never made an effort to contact any member of my birth family. I have always considered myself to be very lucky. I grew up in a terrific home with wonderful parents and lots of extended family, and have always been grateful to my birth mother for making the choice to place me where she knew life would be better for me.
